Basic Christmas Vocabulary
CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS
Although they are observed less and less often in Britain, traditions still have a place in celebrating Christmas. Here's a video telling about the most important of them. Below there's a list of the same traditions with some comments. Why not British it up this year?
10 Ways to British Up Your Christmas Holiday
1. Letters to Santa Claus
After children have written theirs, the Brits burn the letters in the fireplace so the ashes fly up the chimney and Father Christmas can read the smoke.
2. Stockings
British children hang stockings at the end of their bed hoping they will be filled by Christmas morning.
3. Crackers
A cracker is a paper tube, covered in foil, twisted at both ends. It’s shaped like a large sweet with hidden treasures inside. Each person crosses their arms, using their right hand to hold their cracker, and pulling their neighbor’s cracker with their left. POP! The cracker will make a bit of a bang with the contents spilling out which usually is a joke to be read at the dinner table, a small trinket and a paper crown.
4. Crown
Everyone is a king at Christmas! The paper crowns are made of tissue paper and unfold into an actual crown. Adults and children alike don the crown making it a colorful sight.
5. Mid-Day Dinner
The main dish of the Christmas dinner is traditionally a roast turkey, stuffed and served with cranberry sauce (or gravy, or bread sauce) and trimmings. The latter usually include roast potatoes, bacon-wrapped chipolatas (yummy!), Brussel sprouts (a must for the older generation) and other veg like carrots.
6. Christmas Pudding
Christmas pudding is a dense boiled cake flavoured with dried fruit and spices. It's then soaked in alcohol, aged for several months, boiled again, covered in brandy and set on fire when served.
7. Royal Christmas Message
The Queen gives a speech on Christmas Day at 3pm in England.
8. Boxing Day
It follows Christmas day and is a nationally recognized holiday in the UK, also called a bank holiday. The best use the Brits can make of it is shopping.
9. Pantomime
All around the UK pantomimes based on famous fairytales and stories are staged, sometimes involving celebrities.
10. Taking Down the Christmas Tree
Brits say you need to take your tree and decorations down within 12 days of Christmas or you’ll have bad luck for the next year.

Coming Home for Christmas by Heathrow Airport
A lovely and adorable Christmas advert about two bears coming home for the holiday
Eight! Seven! Six! ...
Auld Lang Syne.
А теперь - the lyrics.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? We take a cup of kindness yet For auld lang syne
For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne, we’ll takе a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne.
And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp! and surely I’ll be mine! And we’ll takе a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne.
